Cornwall is, no doubt, one of the most beautiful locations in England. If you’re thinking of visiting, it’s really worth knowing the best walking routes to explore Cornwall so that you can make the most of the scenery. At The Cornwall Hotel, we’re really fortunate to be located near some picturesque walking trails of varying sights and terrain, here some of the best walking routes you can do with your friends or family.
Pentewan Valley Trail
Keen explorers can follow a route that connects St Austell to Pentewan, a beautiful coastal village and former port. Walkers can enjoy a path that follows the old Pentewan railway and a scenic woodland area, with signs you can follow to navigate through. You can either walk or cycle the route, picking up the relevant equipment from Pentewan Valley Cycle Hire at the start of the journey. The walking trail ends as you head towards St Austell; however, if you’re cycling, you can follow the road onto the National Cycle Network route, which will take you towards the Eden Project.
If you’re looking for a break along the way, you can stop off at Pentewan beach to observe the scenic views.
Eden project to Bugle
If you happen to be paying a visit to the Eden Project, you’ll be at the foot of one of Cornwall’s nine Clay Trails: the Eden Project to Bugle walk. An off-road, 3.5 mile trail, explorers can expect to come across beautiful woodland paths and scenic views of the lake, before reaching a metal gate that leads you through to Bugle.
Those who fancy a bite to eat will find a great spot for a picnic, and also have the opportunity to experience a wine tour at Knightor Winery.
Par to Polkerris
After beginning the journey in Par, walkers can join a public footpath that heads towards the beach. Following a stroll through the Par Sands Holiday Park, explorers will join a coastal path that offers a breadth of scenic views, before reaching the pretty village of Polkerris.
After exploring Polkerris, you can continue on the coastal path which progresses into an uphill climb. Once you’ve reached the top of the hill, you’ll stroll through a field before heading downhill to enjoy views across Par and Clay Country.
Offering scenic views and varied terrain, this route is perhaps suited for more experienced walkers.
Par Beach to Eden Project
This trail begins at the beach with views of tall clay-drying chimneys, which has shipped China Clay since the 19th century. Walkers are recommended to begin their expedition at the Par Beach car park, before turning onto the beach. Following a 0.5 mile walk, you can then join the Clay Trail, which is also the point at which cyclists should begin the route.
Walkers can enjoy strolling through a woodland area and a nature reserve, with the opportunity to observe a variety of wildlife – including kingfishers and buzzards. You’ll finish your journey at the Eden Project, where you can observe plants from all over the world.
Upon your return to The Cornwall Hotel, why not treat yourself to an indulgent afternoon tea? Our recently opened Laura Ashley The Tea Room offers a taste experience of savoury and sweet delights in a truly elegant setting.
